Testing Information
You can have your vehicle tested up to 90 days before it is due to be tested. If you come early, it will not affect your renewal date for future tests.
The fee for testing is $20 (cash only).
Why do I need to test my car for emissions in Connecticut?
Although you can’t see it, ozone pollution is a reality in Connecticut and across the United States. Since cars and light duty trucks contribute to the problem, their emissions control systems must be checked over time to ensure they are working properly to control the pollutants they emit.
To manage the Connecticut Emissions Program, the State of Connecticut has combined the resources of the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and Opus Inspection. The DMV provides oversight of the emissions program, while Opus Inspection manages testing, equipment, service, inspector training, and motorist relations.
Connecticut tests nearly 1.3 million vehicles per year. Vehicles are tested every two years by a network of more than 200 privately owned automotive service facilities located at convenient locations throughout the state. By identifying polluting vehicles in need of repair, the state continues to improve air quality and meet regulations imposed by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Clean Air Act.
